Best 1911 Mags

The ones that work best in your 1911. It can vary from gun to gun, but the Wilson’s are a safe bet.

The aforementioned CMC Power Mags are an excellent, less expensive options. They are all I ran in my competition days.

Nowadays, from a design and manufacturing standpoint, Tripp Cobra Mags are the best 1911 mags money can buy, with a lot of options. Harrison Custom in Kennesaw is a distributor for the Tripp mags. They’re all I use in my carry and class guns.

I like my Tripp Cobras for my 10mm's as they hold 10 and are well made.. But for $38 each I decided to give some of these a try CDNN SPORTS 8RD 1911 STAINLESS MAG. For the money and just shooting them in a casual range session you can't go wrong. Time will tell how they hold up. they hold and feed 9rd of 10mm just fine. Has anyone tried any of checkmate's offerings?

Thanks for all the input guys. I've only used Wilson Combat (outside of factory mags and Kim Tac mags) I ordered a few more of the WC but I think I will try a few CMC and Tripp as well.

I will say that I haven't had much luck with Wilson Combat mags in my Springfield TRP 10mm 6 inch. Of course, it could be the gun. It's fairly new and I've only run about 150 rounds through it. It fails to feed way to often for such an expensive gun. I hope it just needs a little more break in.

I run Wilson 10 round and CMC Power 10 mags in my TRP. I also have run a few KimPro mags in my Kimber Custom II. But as cmshoot mentioned the 1911 is a little more sensitive to things so I would see what works best in your personal gun with your preferred ammo and stick with them.

As far as ordering I got my Wilsons from DVOR they have some now:

I’ve had good luck with CMI. They make mags for Kimber, ruger, etc and their reasonably priced... you have to decide what follower/ feed lip style work for your gun and ammo selection. My Factory Ruger mags and CMI’s have fed all the ball and HP ammo I’ve fed it...I’ve never shot wad cutters or semi wads, so not an issue for me.

For what bullet profile.

Wilson mags have wadcutter lips and do well on many type bullets but not as well on others.

Same for semi-wadcutter lips (Colt mags now have these)

Then there are hardball lips, the original GI feed lip geometry. This design work better than the other 2 on GI hardball rounds, but not well with hollowpoints or wadcutter bullets.

I like the real USGI mags as I never shoot anything other than hardball and have had Wilsons choke on them.

What he said. Buy Wilsons and they usually work. I have many of them, pricey though they are. But for hardball profile, and some oddball profiles, you want the original John Browning design. He did, after all, know what he was doing.

Checkmate makes them, and if you start reading, there's a lot of discussion out there on the different feed lip patterns, and which one is best for what application. High speed video shows that an awful lot of ammo in an awful lot of magazines is just barely making it into the chamber-- really close to jamming up. Whereas the feed cycle should never let the cartridge go; it should be controlled all the way into the chamber. But the 1970s demands for feeding wadcutters forced changes to the majority of magazines. Like I said; tons to read on this subject. I'm no expert either.
