Been thinking of picking up a 17...bolt or lever action, hmr vs wsm, idk. What manuf/model the best value for the money just to have fun target shooting mainly? Don't want a POS but don't want top of line either- somewhere in betwixt

I have a marlin 17hmr and it is a great gun, I can hit around 200 yards out with around a 2 inch group on a really good day. And anything closer is around 1 inch group give or take.

Aight, thx for input. Will def check em out. Several options out there so figured to ask those ODT familiar with best midrange price deal for the $$

I've had both hmr and wsm - both are capable of holding around an inch at 100yrds and offer a bit more consistency out to 2-400 yards, especially compared with a .22 rimfire. All of my 17's have been bolt action savages. They are hard to beat for the money. I got all of mine for under $300. My first one was a bull barrel, thumbhole stock - very fun target rifle! Would shoot golf balls off tees without to much trouble at 100 yards. The others were more "standard" plastic stock but still had the heavy barrels - got them as cheap truck/farm guns, we have a bunch of coyotes. Neither killed the coyote any deader than the other. BUT, if you're going to do any coyote hunting - I'd tip the scale towards the wsm, personally. Faster seems to hit a little harder at extended distances... The hmr will probably be easier to find ammo for. But Walmart carries wsm, so it's neither is "hard" to get.. I'm sure you'll enjoy either one you pick.

Happy Shoot'n,
