Best gun to use in a bear attack?

How about a full size 1911 chambered in 460 Rowland. Extra mags are easy to carry and 8 rounds of 44 mag power in each mag. You may not win; but at least you will be in the fight.

I don't think that I'd want to buy a special gun just for a single trip to Alaska or otherwise into big bear territory.
I'd probably carry a S&W 629 loaded with 240-grain soft points. Even though I know that's not ideal, and as far as big revolvers go, a .500 S&W magnum or a .454 Casull would be a lot better when it comes to penetration and energy delivered.
For any of the revolvers, I would want it to have a 6" or 8" barrel. For easy pointing during an emergency "it's going to get me" shot, and for better accuracy when you use the sights to shoot from 25 or 50 yards.

I would not feel under-armed with a 12-gauge pump shotgun, which, if you don't already have one, is only a $200-$300 investment.
Sure, dragging a long gun through the woods can be a bit of a hassle, and you've always got one hand occupied with it, and it would require 2 hands free to get a second or subsequent shots off.

But a .70 caliber, 430-grain lead slug moving at 1500+ f.p.s. would comfort me more than any handgun.

460 Rowland is just a barrel and spring swap for a 1911. Same mags as standard for all conversions. Literature says that you can still shoot 45acp in the gun. Says like shooting 38 special in 357. They also make versions for Glock, XD, and XDm that would super simple swap. A lot lighter than a shotty; but not as effective.

Don't want to fight. Want to win. I'm a fan of the 460, but it's just not the right choice for defense against a pissed off Grizzly Bear.

12 gauge with slugs first and foremost. But if I wouldn't lug that around, I'd take a 10mm Glock.
