That would seem to be the key. If they get loose, they dont need to make it back home. If nonlethal is necessary, use a large animal trap and drop him off at death row a few counties away.

Forgive me: You and your neighbors are clearly being menaced by these damn dogs and, by transitive property, their idiot thug owner. Brandishing a stick too, is he?

You're talking about the safety of your wife. Your dogs that are probably like children to you. Versus a couple of large, unstable, violent dogs hunting/attacking as a team? I think your reluctance to harm or kill these dogs is commendable and speaks volumes about your character. But given the ferocity of both these dogs attacking possibly from different directions, and how soon, in the course of an attack, they could be on you, your wife or pets, I don't think you ought to consider lethal means as a backup. Consider that there might not even be enough time to switch to that lethal means during the attack, before a loved one, or a neighbor's kid, is injured or worse. Do you want to risk this? Plus there have been documented problems with this thug's animals, so that should help in the case of inquiry.
I've had back-and-forths before with neighbors about noise etc, and worried, "Should I call the cops or let it ride this time?" Worried about possible fallout with people I live next to (kind of in the 'hood, btw), but I think when it's about keeping your loved ones out of danger, you are absolutely justified and should not lose a wink of sleep.

Sorry you are going through this, I don't envy you.

Necessity really, not want. Certainly the owner is responsible, but any animal trying to kill you also has some responsibilty. I'm like dogs as much as anyone else, but when the choice is bewtween animal and human rights the choice is an easy one for me.
