2014, Stephens County GA, I had just cut a trail and the deer had been all over it.

My cousin shot one on our lease in Heard Co. back in 1993 or so first Coyote I had seen.

That’s wild. I did some cursory research and this is a genetic mutation called melanism. You see it in deer and other animals, too. Black coyotes with the mutation show up more in mountainous areas for some reason.

Interesting I recall phoning Georgia DNR way back when asking and some yokel dismissed me with zero interest.

I will be more alert for a Black one now

Most of the coyotes we have in Marion county are black. Seeing a grey or white/black one down there is uncommon.

I recall seeing a black yote in pike around 1990ish, like you that was the first yote I'd saw in ga, heck I thought it was a wolf, still not 100% sure. Someone had alread shot one of its front legs off, so it probably didn't last much longer .

I’m DNR, just a maintenance guy, but they do have a lot of those types in my experience. Some care more than others.
