I need a little help with a little project. It’s nothing earth shattering or ultra- important, and I wouldn’t want to inconvenience anyone. It’s a little metal fab and a little welding (and if I’m incorrect, please set me straight). I’m hoping it’s fairly simple and possibly fun. Okay, here it goes…

After helping one of my neighbors out with a project at their place, they gifted me this standing ashtray- it’s made out of a dummy MK15 aerial bomb. I don’t smoke, but I love military stuff like this. Someone cut the thing in half and put a concave bowl shape in the hole. What I want to do is ”restore” it back to its old shape and paint and stencil it like it’s ready to be loaded into the belly of an airplane so it can grace my den.

The MK15 was built for target practice; they were made of simple welded sheet metal and were filled with sand and water, and pained baby blue (Yuck). From tip to boxed tail it would stand about 42”, now as an ashtray it’s about half that. It’s about 8” diameter; I just purchased a metal dome which will be the new head or end.

What I need help with would be rolling a piece of sheet steel into an 8” diameter tube and welding the tube and dome together to the existing “bomb” body. I don’t weld, so I wanted to know if there was anyone out there, perhaps in the Marietta area or close by, that would want to help me with this ridiculous project? Check out the pictures and give me your thoughts- and PM if you want to take a shot at this, and we can discuss the details.

Another member, dchance, reached out to me to help me out. He hand-formed a new cylindrical body and welded it to my existing tail section no dome top. He even fabbed up a set of hang loops and attached a nose fuse to it. Overall, I think it turned out great. Next up is an olive drab paint job and stenciling.
