Browning Auto 5 plug removal

Is this one of the original, recoil-operated A5’s? If so, you should be able to remove the plug after you remove the magazine cap.

You can bring it by TruPrep in Marietta and I can remove it for you. If it’s as easy as I remember, there won’t be any charge for it. I’m out of town, and will be back in the shop on Nov 1.

For the current production A5, remove the magazine cap and forearm then use a key or a screwdriver press inward and turn the key or flat blade screwdriver a quarter turn to align the three shot adapter (plug) with the slot in the end of the magazine. This unlocks the three shot adapter allowing it to be removed.

For the original Auto 5 models, remove the magazine cap and forearm then use a screwdriver to gently pry out the magazine spring retainer then remove the plug. The retainer will be under pressure from the magazine spring so use caution when capturing and removing. Remove the wooden or plastic plug from inside the magazine spring and then reinstall the magazine spring and retainer. You should be able to hold the retainer with one hand and tap it back into the magazine tube with a small hammer. Yes, you will probably hit your finger the first time you attempt. :D

Art suggests driving a nail partially into the wooden workbench and using the head of the nail to pull the magazine spring retainer from the magazine tube. This keeps the magazine spring retainer and spring pointed in a safe direction for removal.
