alright, thanks for the input. maybe a little background would help. the holes are about an inch apart and offset by a half an inch at every quarter rotation. it was found in a crawl space, so it probably has something to do with construction. my guess is a plumb bob, but why so many holes? by the way, the .50 cal flute comment made me accidentally cough up a good scotch! thanks for that.

Looks like a primer to a 40mm or bigger shell. I am 100% sure that's what it is and it's most likely going to be from something bigger.
