Can you replace solid lifters with hydraulic lifters?

Adjust them with it running, after you warm it up. Loosen each on until it rattles a little, the slowly tighten it back until it stops then go 1/2 round tighter.

That would be for hydraulic lifters. Solid lifters have a screw and a locknut.

They get adjusted with a feeler gauge

Lobe profiles on a solid lifter cam are different than ones on a hyd cam.
I'd try setting the lash at .004-.006 cold

This is 100% correct! However I think the cold lash should be around 10 thousands if it a newer mechanical lifter set up. The older designs needed a good deal more lash if memory serves me right. It's a good idea to run a good friction modifier in a solid lifer motor as well.

If you're going to remove this cam, just replace it with a hyd lifter one.
Just follow flat tappet cam break-in procedures.

Don't go too aggressive on your cam choice. You'll need enough vacuum for those power brakes

I'm thinking about one of the Howards retro roller cams. It's pretty agressive now as the power brakes are more for looks than "power". Prob going to add a Leed electric vac pump. PO added a vac cannister but it's not so good in low pseed traffic.

Vacuum pump.......However I don't really need it. I can still lock them up either way

Other than pulling cam or removing trans and removing rear cam plug to get cam numbers and manufacture I'd adjust to around .018 to .020 cold and see how she runs. Don't won't to go to tight because you could get coil bind on valve spring depending on springs used

It's just a weekend hotrod. Wish list is either go hydroboost or electric vac pump at some point.
