2016 film starring Viggo Mortensen. Highly rated on IMDB and by critics. Let me start by saying this movie is controversial. It mixes a bunch of stereotypes. It directly (and effectively) questions American social norms and institutions.
The plot surrounds a family of six kids being raised by their dad (Mortensen) in true homesteading fashion, in the wilderness of the Pacific northwest. They are rugged, self-sufficient, off-grid survivalists, but also socialist-leaning hippies. Unfortunate circumstances force them to road trip into mainstream America, colliding with their extended family, who view them as outlandish and crazy.
The fascinating thing about this movie is that it highlights both profound flaws in their lifestyle, as well as profound flaws in the society they disdain.
