6.8spc- I love the 270 Winchester, but the fact that nothing 5.56 works with it- WHY????

The short answer (and I'm no expert) is case capacity. The .277 Wolverine wildcat my 68forums compadre has developed is based on the .223 case with 6.8 projectiles. The velocities he is getting approach the SAMMI spec 6.8SPC commercial loads, but won't touch the Tac commercial or handloads. Just like the .300BO, all that's required is a barrel change.

6.8 SPC is a good round if you consider several things.

One, prices suck but that's pretty much every rifle round that fits an AR-15 other than 223/556, 762x39, and 545x39.

Second, is there a more deadly round for medium sized game that is readily available for less than $1.00/round, has 25+ round magazines available, and will fit into an AR-15 magwell?

That is if you compare blasting ammo prices. True there are no $.35/rd 6.8SPC deals out there, but that isn't what the 6.8 is about. It IS a legit, ethical round for deer and hogs as you say, but with hunting ammo in the under and around $1.00/rd range similar or cheaper than hunting ammo in other popular calibers. AND even the plinking ammo is coming down. You can get Sellier and Bellot FMJ at LAXammo for $0.68/rd DELIVERED through Sunday. This is good ammo with good reloadable brass (S&B reportedly makes brass for Hornady)

I just ran about 200 rds of the S&B through 6 of the new CPD mags with 0 hick-ups. Not a broad testing, but a good start.

.243 - Too many deer are wounded / not killed. I know people hunt with the .223 as well, and I know the argument about shot placement, but neither are great deer hunters.

.300 Win Mag - Had one, bought it cheap from someone who said "Didn't matter where I shot a deer, it was goin' down". Accurate, but a true one-shot rifle, and I didn't need a 600 yard rifle at the time.

The 10m has been "down loaded" to .40 S&W power, hasn't it?

Don't knock my .25, it's my back-up, back-up, BUG! (Snicker, snicker)

But I'll try any gun once, and if I like it, I'll try it again (and again, and again, etc)

And remember, if we were all shooting "X" caliber, the shortage of ammo would make 22LR pale in comparison!

Well if you hit the deer where you are supposed to they will drop, look's you need more time on the range not a bigger bullet!

because what we need is a kinder, gentler and SLOWER .45...

Hardly slower (200 grains at 1000 fps or 185 grains at 1100 fps).

Criticize the GAP for only being available online, or for not fitting the same size guns as 9mm. That's accurate. But to say that it isn't at least the equal of standard pressure 45 acp in terms of speed/energy.... That's plain wrong.

Really? The 300 WSM is probably the best all around cartridge ever developed. The power of a 300 Win Mag in a shorter, lower recoiling and intrinsically more accurate round that can be used in lighter weight rifles. What's not to like?

Many of the most experienced riflemen in the world think it's the closest thing to a perfect cartridge available.
