Catalytic converter crisis

sometimes a temp gun pointed at a cat can
pinpoint your problem. a stopped up cat will
run hotter than the others, sometimes glowing
cherry red under load. old timers used to use
sockets that were slightly smaller in diameter
than the exhaust piping to check for a restric-
tion by placing the socket in the tailpipe you
could tell if the vehicle had a restiction by
change or lackthereof in engine performance.

Well he is going to come see me tuesday so I can hook up the scanner and check the PID's that will let me know if it is a converter or some other issue causing the converter to take too long to warm up. Does not matter if it is p0420 or 430 as this truck has two cats and one post cat all in the y pipe assembly. Given the mileage I would bet one of the cats is taking too long to light off (some contamination on the platinum, palladium, causing a loss in the abiltity to store and release oxygen.)
