Is anyone shooting in the idpa event at Cherokee Gun Club tomorrow? I am thinking of shooting it for my first pistol match and would love to have someone to follow around.

There are challenging and fun parts to both. Idpa has a lot more shooting positions and shooting in and around obstacles but the do require you to shoot the stage a certain way. Uspsa is more like solving a puzzle and there is no right or wrong way to shoot a stage. Its all how you think is fastest. Granted you may not always be right but still Fun to try. Uspa also tends to end up with quite a few stationary shooting stages. Ie boxes to shoot from.

USPSA and IDPA both have advantages and disadvantages. Either provides you with exactly what you put into it... I've run into a lot fewer egos in IDPA than in USPSA and especially at Cherokee, which is a good club with good stage design for the most part. YMMV.

I really appreciate all of the replies, I have been trying to decide what match to shoot in. Cherokee has a good reputation locally and they have both available to shoot just a week or so apart. I may show up tomorrow if the weather is decent and give it a shot! Thanks.

No brainer, USPSA, it's freestyle. Idpa is short it how we want you to, not how you feel is the best way.

I must have NO BRAIN... Both have their strong and weak points. I split my time between here and FL so I shoot IDPA here and USPSA in FL. Ultimately they are both challenging in different ways and both a game. If you adhere strictly to either in a gun fight it may not work out well for you. I would say if your looking to hone your gun fighting skills the IDPA would probably be a bit better by erring on the side of caution and cover and more realistic scenerios. Not to say that there couldn't be certain instances to "run and gun" in a gun fight where your USPSA skills would shine. A mix of both is good though. Only hint I have if that if you're doing it for defensive shooting skills, don't get sucked into the "game". As gaming either can hurt you everyday carry shooting skills. If I was forced to do one it would be IDPA as defensive shooting is my goal and USPSA's complete lack of regard for cover and real life scenarios wouldn't work for me.
