You would be correct model 28 Generally came with service Magna checkered stocks.
I have a nice set of N-Frame Magna's for you. If you are interested PM me. They would at least be the proper type of stocks that it would have come with. They have the stamped steel, silver disks on the inside and are Serial Numbered to the revolver that they originally came from. The checkering is very nice and they still have the original finish. They do look much better in person than the pictures can represent. The proper screw is included. I think $60 would be fair if you are interested. I will ship them to you within Georgia.

Thanks for clearing that up I thought I had read that some of the 28-2's came with target grips from the factory.
A lot of dealers were known to switch out grips in their shop...target grips on 28-2's were a common swap out.
In addition, once upon a time, LONG, long ago, you could "Special Order" almost anything you wanted from Smith & Wesson, so there are a few HP's that have gone out the door with Target Grips installed--But those that can be VERIFIED either with a Factory Letter or with the End Label on the Box are few & far between--HTH--mikey357
