I have a question and I’m posting it here due to the fact that there are a lot of people here that have a vast knowledge of Smith revolvers. I recently obtained a S&W pre model 10. The gun has a C prefix serial number and the first three digits of the serial number are 379. The serial number is on the butt of the grip frame as is expected and there is a different number on the frame near the crane. Most of the older smiths I have owned had the serial number under the barrel where the ejector rod rests and stamped on the cylinder. This one does not. Is this normal or do I have a Frankenstein gun?

The number on the frame below the forcing cone is a manufacturing number. On early smiths the serial number was only stamped below the forcing cone if it came with target grips. The late 70s and early 80s was when it became standard to put the serial there. Sometimes the number there will match a number stamped on cylinder.

I appreciate the info. I had no idea that it was stamped for target grips! I had someone tell me it may have been rebuilt because the barrel and cylinder were not numbered.
