Last night my wife and I went to the Clint Black concert at Columbus Civic Center. I was surprised that he still had a good voice, and the show itself was a good one. He did most of his own songs, and a few Merle Haggard tunes and did a good job on them too. Butttttt. Unfortunately (for Columbus Hospice) the crowd just wasn't there. It was a fundraiser for Columbus Hospice, so they had dinner and tables on the floor, a sellout, but the CC itself was maybe 1/2 full, and I'm stretching that number I think. On the good side it made for a more intimate night, (with the exception of that 1 drunk azz singing along behind us). On the way home my wife and I were talking about how someone as famous as Clint Black, with his songs still being played regularly on radio and even on Sirius wouldn't have the following he used to have, at least to sell out a small stadium like the CC. Granted, he hasn't had a new album in years, but neither has Willie, and he's a sellout anywhere he goes. Then the conversation went to the money that was made from it for the charity. I couldn't figure how they could have made any money on it after I started thinking about how many people were involved in putting it on, the backup band, the transports, the rigging, the venue and everything else. Even if the CC and Clint Black donated their time and venue, everyone else had to get paid, and that ain't cheap. Personally I think they went into the charity's pocket to pay for the night, and that's a shame. Had I known there would have been a dinner before the show I definitely would have grabbed a ticket for that. The food and drink looked great. Anyway, if Clint has a show close, he's worth the ticket price to see. He may be second tier now, but he sounds as good as ever. Unless that drunk happens to be there too.
