So, I don't even know what these helmets are for. They don't look like something that provides good cover from shrapnel.

Any coverage is better than no coverage! It’s a IIIA level helmet so slower moving rounds (primarily pistol) and shrapnel is all it’s rated to stop. It’s also the best means for mounting NVGs and other accessories to as well.

Last night I did a little reading. When I enlisted, we had the steel pots and we were switching to the Kevlar.
It was good to see the progress we've made.
