Yeah, when I originally saw it, CNN was covering the fact that it happened so on that one it said CNN on it.

The rush to be "first" over rides any other sense they may have. As I recall it, some kid who was interning with the NTSB trolled the news station with a call. The producer in that ladies ear was on the phone with him. No vetting or anything. Straight from the prank caller to the news reporter. Show runner and several producers were fired if I remember correctly. Unbelievably stupid. The retraction video is even more cringe, if that's believable.
