Hello all,

Over the past two days of been mildly concerned about one or two of my rifles. Whenever I first got into milsurp I bought some surplus ammo. Particularly 8mm Mauser(Romanian) and 7.62x54r(Yugo). I’ve only shot my Czech Mauser 2 times, all of which was with surplus ammo. My Nagants have been a variety of milsurp and commercial ammo.

The thing that I’m concerned about is that I don’t remember how quickly I cleaned the barrels after using the corrosive ammunition. In preparation for going with a friend and colleague tomorrow I was cleaning a few things and my Mauser was pretty dirty. I keep my guns in a room that has a dehumidifier in it. So it’s my hope that corrosion was limited due to. They’re not being too much moisture in the air for us to happen. But some rust has indeed happened. The last time I shot my Mauser was 2 months ago. I think I cleaned it, but I’m not sure. Plus it was pretty dirty. Essentially I’m posting to see if anyone has experience with corrosive ammonia, and gauge just how fu**ed by rifle(s) may be. Thanks!

It should only be surface rust in your barrel if it's only been 2 months. So clean your barrel again, with a brass bore brush. Then with a bore mop with lots of CLP on it.

I'd be more concerned about the bolt on your Mauser, make sure it's been cleaned thoroughly and given a good coat of CLP. I think the primers are your worst enemy, and will rust parts of your bolt that are difficult to clean, much less see.

Surplus ammo isn't the super bargain that it used to be. To avoid the headaches that come with shooting old ammo, I'd just buy a few boxes of new non crossive ammo for your range days.

I get it buddy, everybody hates to clean guns except for me I think it's therapeutic but then I'm not altogether there anyway. 🤣

When shooting corrosive ammo it's absolutely imperative to clean the gun after each range visit. It's way too easy to stick those guns in the cabinet or safe and forget about them for a few months. The next thing you know it turns into 6 months or a year and then the quality of the barrel has suffered. I know to some people it's boring and just a pain in the neck but in your case with that corrosive ammo it's just something you can't overlook.

Keep on shooting brother!

I always take a can of WD-40 with me when shooting corrosive ammo spray it down good at range, get home and clean thoroughly and then wipe down with CLP and run wet patch with clp through bore, never had any rust or problems with any of my rifles.

My wife has an electric kettle that boils water pretty quickly.

After shooting corrosive I pour the hot water down the bore and on gas system, etc. Nice thing is that it dries almost instantly. Then clean as you would any other firearm.
