Coyote Hunting

My best luck has been catching them crossing open ground from one tree line to the next.

I shot one yesterday the same way. I was using a doe grunt when she came out in a clearing. I dropped it with a 30-30 and threw it deep in the woods away from my stand.

I shot at one today, andIi wasn't even hunting. was down at the land owners barn getting ready to do some electrical work for him and it apeared. So I grabbed his 22 mag out of the Kubota and leaned on the hood of the and aimed high. It acted like it was hit. It jumped and stood there hunkered up. I shot again and it ran down the back side of the damn. A few minutes later it came back and was shaking as if it just got ut of the creek and trying to get dry. Took another pop shot and it ran back down.

So we wlked down to investigate the area and see if there was any blood, none to be found. And the coyoote was hanging around. I took another shot at it on it's trot and asume I missed, since it was in and out of cover. However it did not run away at full speed after being shot at and within 50 yards of humans. We figure I scored a hit with the firs shot and gymped him since a 22mag is not suffient for a 315 yard shot according to my range finder. Gonna go out tomorrow and see how a little calling will work. This thing was big!!! At 300 yards I could see the white under his neck. If I get him i will post some pics.

I've seen two while walking a pecan orchard I deer hunt. One was @ 10 in the morning and I managed to get within 50 yds and shot 3 arrows at it. Unfortunately, misjudged the range and missed all 3 times. In my defense it was also a really small coyote. Saw another this weekend just before dark crossing the orchard, but didn't shoot at it. You can find them by walking around, but I'm sure there is a pretty high amount of luck involved with that method.

I don't think there is a season on coyotes, but I don't know what regs say about hunting them at night. I think there is a season for bobcats, though.

Coyotes are fair game 24/7 with no season or limit!!!

My father said he'll let me hunt them on his (family owned) hunting club once deer season is up. I just wish I could find a place now to go hunting for them.

The tough part isn't what to do with them when you get them, it's getting them. Unless it's random (seeing them while doing something else) I've had very little luck hunting them. I've baited them with a daily chicken, used dear carcass and calls. All to no avail. I can tell they're around but they wait for me to leave. They are very smart, and have incredable sense of smell and vision. Also doesn't hurt that they do most of there trucking at night. I even have military grade gen IIIa night vision and have still yet to bad one yote on a designate yote hunt?? So when you figure it out let me know.

I have popped a couple while deer hunting. They are a target of opportunity for me as I don't generally take the time to target them specifically. I do know if you leave them laying where a deer can see them that the deer wont hang around to find out if they are alive or dead, the deer will get gone.

In georgia you can hunt yotes 24/7 365. You can't hunt them at night on wmas or nf. If you already have the AR, just get you a foxpro and some red led lights. Good luck to ya
