Search with quotes such as "original owner" and "actual miles". When you find something highlight the contact number and do a quick google search. If the search pulls up multiple cars, move on.
I used this method to buy cars for the kids. It's not bullet proof but helps weed out some of the riff-raff.
Bought my daughter a truck 2 weeks ago: 92 Ranger, 4 cylinder 5speed with air and only 74,000 miles. $1500
Real people are out there, just got to weed them out.

And definitely avoid all those Asians/Europeans that answer all questions with "iz good carr, iz good carr" or "I buy from oction".

The new March 2013 law was aimed squarely at us and people like us. And I'm sure it was lobbied very hard by the dealer's association. Every industry and the people in it want their little hustle protected from the competition. Not too long ago I tried to hand one of our bidness cards to a guy that runs a raggedy little auction basically in his backyard over in Byron. He acted offended and wouldn't take the card. Then he told me about all the license fees and associated expenses he pays to be legal. SO I just said to him " So that's why you're trying to get $4500 for a 97 200SX?" and I walked off .

I tell everyone that buys a car from us what to expect at the tag office. Most of them already know. It's not my fault that the state wants to collect every dime possible. Soon they'll be taxing yard sales.

In a small town next to my small town, they have already put in effect you have to get a special permit to have a yard sale and a limit of how many.

You got it all wrong. Didn't you hear? Our elected officials have done away with the birthday tax in GA. It was a victory for the people. /s

There is one site I use called Bookoo. Around here it's called Robins Yardsale/Bookoo. There are usually half a dozen pages of cars and trucks there. And I've never run into a scammer there. Sometimes you can find a deal in the Robins Federal Credit Union Bulletin. It comes out every two weeks but it's also on line. If you're willing to drive to middle GA you might score a deal that way. The bulletin also has real estate and guns listed regularly.

And yes, that is absolutely whom it was aimed at. You and the average person selling their property for which they have already paid a sales tax. Now, every time that car gets titled to a new owner, the government collects the tax again. It "levels" the playing field for used car dealers and continues to screw the private citizen. Bastards.

You know I've had my share of people look at me like I'm a douchebag because I hustle cars. But at the same time a lot of people appreciate what we do and will call periodically to ask if we have anything good. Right now I have a Land Rover. I don't know if that qualifies as good or not.
Anyway, I don't mind the ones who think I'm some kinda crook. They don't know ****. We have financed cars for people before with no interest. Sometimes it works and sometimes it don't. If buying and selling used cars is dirty or less than honorable then so be it. We all have to do what we're good at. And this is what I'm good at.

Yea that Title fee can be expensive. But just to expand on it, it is not based on the amount you pay for the car, it is based on the amount the state values the car. So if I buy a car from my brother for $1, the state can still collect the full 6.75% on their stated value.

We are currently looking for a car for my daughter. We went to 19 car dealerships on Friday- yep- 19. We spent anywhere between 2minutes to 0ne hour at each lot, depending on selection and price.

In most cases, car under 10K seemed to be very used or are priced more than the loan value. Example, we looked at a 2000 honda accord, drove excellent, low miles for the year, price was 9K! I asked the guy for the cash price (I found out he was a buy here pay here) He said oh , cash- $6,900 that includes fees and the title tax. I called the credit union and they stated the loan value is $5,600. ($1,300 less)

When I informed him, he says, yea you need to pay down $1,300 to get it...So let me get this striaght, you want me to give $1,300 to get the car down to the actual value/ what it's worth? nope.

Yall might have seen the sky blue and white 84 F150 I had listed here a few months ago. We got it along with a 67 C10 step side from the same woman. Anyway, the truck was really clean and I wanted to keep it. That's my favorite F series body style. But we wound up selling it to Swampbuck. He drove it 90+ miles back home with no complaints. And when he showed up he had never seen the truck in person before. But he paid the $3350 that he had agreed to without haggling or nitpicking.
Since then he has had to spend a good bit more money on the truck and I felt bad about that. BUT... it's a 30 year old truck and I'm not a mechanic. Some things can't be immediately known on any vehicle. But he knew that and didn't ***** about any of it. Plus, he never asked what we had in it and didn't care. I'm the same way. If you have something I want/need and it's a good price that I can afford I don't give a damn if you have $1.00 in it.
In 2011 we got an 03 Impala for $200.00 because the owner couldn't drive anymore and couldn't find the title. And when they called they asked for $200.00. I didn't haggle them down to that. Well I got a $150.00 title bond on it and we sold it to my mother for $2500.00. At the time it was still worth nearly $5000.00. So she was glad to get it.I have since told her what we paid and she didn't care because she still got a good deal.
