Customer tried to steal a handgun and run out the door

CMshoot, at some point in the future when you're confident that your business or you personally will not face any criminal or civil repercussions over this, I hope you'll flesh this out some more. We all ought to have that conversation about using force against shoplifters, especially a single shoplifter who is slow and weak and small compared to the person doing the arrest / detention.
And those of us who are not involved in management or security at a business might still witness a store employee attempting to detain a shoplifter, and in case we want to intervene on the side of the good guy(s).

(Hypothetical example: I'm a customer at at the front door through which the bad guy is about to escape in one second, and it doesn't look like the pursuing store employee is going to catch up with the bad guy in time to make contact still inside the business.)

Naw, you can just piss off.

Now it's just at the top

I’ve been in LE for 30 years. Ain’t my first slam, and won’t be my last. I’m a Use of Force Instructor, and know exactly what I can and can’t do.
I'm a civilian, always have been, looks like I always will be. I work at a gun store part time now that I've retired from being a doctor. No way I'm putting my 401(k) or home equity in the crosshairs to stop a "theft by taking", especially considering I make like $14 an hour at the store.

still, here for it, I've shopped at Tru prep and will continue to do so. Good on you, Shep

Taking use of force advice from a lawyer is like getting tax advice from an IRS agent.
