I'm not sure when these became so cheap, but Primary Arms has them on sale for $3.99. I seem to remember these being close to $50 a while back:

Ive got one of those DD vertical grips on one of my Ar15s and like it fine. Like you said, easily worth that price.

My guess is they are cheaper because they're an older design and many guys go with the AFGs or stubby ones. I have one of these and it works great if you want a vertical grip with a compartment for a battery, etc.
