I don't think it's going to do too much for them this time of year but I don't guess it will hurt either. The time to put it out is in spring when daddies are growing antlers and mommies are growing babies.
It never hurts to put anything out deer a curious creatures.Had part of our land burned one time they would come out paw and play in it.
I put it on a stump, let it soak in and keep reapplying vs burying it. It works pretty well especially in combination with a salt block. The deer will dig it out for a long time once the area is saturated.
