I am looking for some help on picking out my first deer rifle. I have never been deer hunting before. I have been hunting for about 30 years for small game and now want to try my hand at this. I don't know what brand or what caliber rifle to get open for suggestions. Please let me know what you think and why. Thanks for any info.

This has been brought up before and there is no one best answer but I will chime in.

For Georgia large game any reputable bolt action in 308 or 30-06 will suffice every time.

The 308 is the best all around hunting round for our area IMHO. Never had a deer walk away and it is good in the brush as well. As for the specific rifle, find what fits you best and you shoot best. Winchesters fit me perfectly right out of the box but I can't get a Remington that I am comfortable with.

I'd buy a 243, very versatile cartridge, you can shoot 95-105 grain bullets for deer or drop all the way down to 55 grain bullets for varmits. Recoil is very low and ammo is reasonably priced. They are an absolute fantastic whitetail cartridge.

Savage 110 series in 30-06. Made in the USA,affordable, dead nuts accurate, and you'll never find yourself undergunned.

There's a reason the 30-06 bolt action with a 3-9x40 scope is the number one most popular deer rifle in the US.

I wish I lived where y'all do to need a 30 06 or .308. I have never had to track a deer more than 50' and I have only hunted with either a .45LC lever action or a 5.56 semi auto. I must confess that I have not had a shot much further than 100 yards due to hills and brush.
