Discipline or too extreme??

I can honestly say that the discipline given to me when I was younger made me the man that I am today. I'd hate to think where I would be now without that discipline. In today's society it would been considered child abuse. My parents would have both went to prison. My dad's favorite saying was " a hard head makes for a sore ass".

I'm familiar with that. I had to haul straw and hay from sun-up to sun-down while in middle school. Didn't have to carry them continuously but they weighed 40 plus pounds and I walked all day. I remember going back to school finally bigger that the other guys. They never picked on me again. Child labor laws didn't count back then. Not sure about all the facts of this situation, but I know we never went without water longer than it took to load a truck. The rod accross my bottom and "forced" labor definitely made me grow up fast.

Several of you guys have said that doing this without water is what makes it too harsh. You do realize that the only person that said anything about this kid not having any access to water is the pizza delivery guy, right? He is obviously making an assumption. The father was checking on his son and was probably making sure he stayed hydrated. He learned this when he was in the military and the military makes sure you drink plenty of water. I'm confident the father was doing the same thing.

At 16 I just got put through a wall, this aint nothing. I learned real quick to toe the line and I'm glad of what was taught to me by my father. I learned respect.

Not to mention the fact that, unless you are already dehydrated, 45 minutes without water isn't that big of a deal, regardless of the activity.

Well we can both just assume what you (or I) are capable of. Are you 4'2" and 135#? If not, please carry 20% of your body weight in concrete in your hands for 5 minutes.
I ran a 5k Saturday morning. I would not want to cover that ground hand carrying a landscaping block, especially in this heat, with no water, FOUR times over the course of the weekend for any reason, much less to 'learn a lesson' from my daddy.
The kid was watching "too many youtube videos". How about take away the blasted computer/tablet/cell phone and put his rump to work in the yard for not listening? Being a PARENT is not being a friend but it's also not being a drill sargeant.

No, the kid was watching Youtube instead of doing his school work. The father had actually pulled the kid out of public school because of the trouble he was getting into and to try and fix the problem. It's clear that the boy was having ongoing disciplinary problems and the father had worked up to this kind of punishment because nothing else was working.

And again, the only one saying he did not have water is the pizza guy.

everyone mouthing off before they knew the whole story... but that is what we do in America right!?

The kid was special needs .. yes he was 16 but he was very small weak and the size of an 8yo...is it still ok?
