Does cerakoting an AR15 decrease the value

I'm always concerned when any gun has been refinished. The question that comes to mind is what needed to be covered over.

If you Cerakote it, it is for you not the next guy and that is okay. It does decrease the value if you consider the money you spend on the work.

I'm with the other guys on here and question why a gun has been refinished. It also depends on who did the Cerakote. I have seen some work first hand that is beautiful and some that look like a 5th grade art project.

Disclosure: I am a guy who won't buy an AR built in "some guy's garage" so I am not the best litmus test.

I believe if it is a Colt, DD or some other factory built, high end it may. If it is a home built, DPMS, Bushmaster, or other it may not effect the value.

You guys gonna hate on me... I can take it. The reason is they are for me, mine, my idea, wont be selling yes garage built. Not hiding anything. All of my work is/was brand new no blems. It's like I said before very similar to hot rods which I've done before and lost tons of money doing. It's all about what you like. I agree I probably would never buy a gun cerakoted in most cases I wouldnt like it. Now that SR is purdy though.

My first AR was cerakoted from a "professional" as I purchased it from him at a gun show as a new rifle. It looked awesome, but the gun had feed problems that I never could resolve by changing the buffer, different lubricants, nickel boron BCG, extractor spring upgrade, etc. My thought was that the extra thickness the cerakote added threw off the tolerances. This might not have been the case but I'd wary of cerakote or durakote on an AR at least.

Yes that coat of paint can throw things off. I'm a sucker for Seekins products but they are so tight to tolerance another coat really can cause issues. I've sent back an unpainted upper back because the anodizing made the upper too tight I couldnt get the barrel to seat. The C3 lower wouldnt drop mags free not because of Cerakote just a tight magwell (Known problem). I dont usually have the buffer tube painted just for the reason mentioned. I just did a count 5 of 10 AR platforms are Cerakoted and 1 HD shotgun is Durakoted. Also 5 of 10 are garage assembled.
