Sorry for your loss, man.
She was our only outside dog and very good about letting us know if anything was outside. I'm adding some extra security outside today to maybe give us an alert if somebody comes in the yard.
Sorry for your loss. It seems a little out there but I'll share anyway. My in-laws neighborhood had 5 or 6 people lose dogs in a similar way just a few weeks ago. Nobody found any sign of purposeful poisoning. They suspect that it may have been a poisonous moss or mold (can't remember exactly) that the dogs had gotten into. With this wet weather and swinging temperatures it kinda made sense. Just a thought.
Dang Howard, so sorry to hear about your dog. If you need another one to keep outside for protection, just let me know and I'll send my wife down. 
Bloat (stomach gets twisted) It happens to larger dogs usually after eating. If you don't get them to a vet in a short amount of time they will die.

My brothers German shepherd died the same way a year ago. Thought it might have come from licking some kind of frog in the yard. But it's to cold for that.
Just lost a GSD on New Years Eve. Tiny sliver of wood from a stick he had chewed perforated his intestines. Only three years old. I feel for y'all. My GSDs are family members. Hurts losing one.
