Some great ideas. I started mixing in a tablespoon of bacon drippings each morning, and he's doing better. 1st thing is to get the wife to stop feeding him table scraps. He gets a raw egg once a week, a d a fish oil gel cap every other day. The allergy comment is right on. This weekend I'm going to do some brand shopping.

I've got a Frenchie, Cairn and picking up a Bouvier des Flandres puppy this weekend. I went from Evo (very good food, but rich, especially for the Cairn) Red to Nutro Ultra and nearly killed the Frenchie due to a food allergy...not to mention a bad diagnoses from a vet. As of now, the Frenchie and Cairn eat Natural Balance Sweet Potato and Bison for the last 2 years (they are getting bored though). The Bouvier breeder is on a totally raw program. The wife is not sold and doesn't want to bother with raw. Since I can't get a bag of Orijen or Acana to her, she's gonna be started on the Blue Buffalo Wilderness puppy today. If it were up to me and all my dogs were able to eat the protein levels, I would do raw mixed with Orijen or Acana. This is expensive and while I don't like spending money, you gotta know the benefits far out weigh the cost...less stool, healthy coat, etc. Just feed the best you can afford. While some grains are more digestable than others, none are natural and corn doesn't digest at all...it ends up a smelly landmine in your yard...so if you can go grain free. Potatoes, especially sweet potatoes are a very good source of carbs in the food recipe. Supposedly the raw.diet is cheaper than you think. Feed 2-3% of the body weight unless you really work the dog. Bone in chicken, etc is okay as long as its NOT cooked..makes bones brittle. There's always Blue Ridge Beef...I haven't used them, but think its measured, prepackaged stuff. Good luck! If you don't watch yourself, you over analyze.

I am moving mine over to a predominantly raw diet.... right now I am mixing dry food with raw venison 4 days a week, a raw egg one day a week, a fattier meat (liver/beef) one day a week and fish one day a week.

I am using up the crappy pedigree and iams that I have presently and will be most likely moving to blue buffalo or other grain-free food. I also am going to have to hit my bag limit this deer season to feed the pups for the year!

this. if you can afford it.

at least go grain free if you cannot.

the wife and i rescue dozens of dogs every year. we have 10 that we call our own. and i'll tell you one thing, competition breeds hunger. none of my dogs turn their noses up to food. it's also expected that as dogs get older, their appetite changes some as well as how hardily they eat. mix a bit of wet food in with his dry and he should be good. another thing that's cost effective is to mix in either canned pumpkin or squash
