I've got some ceiling water damage, never tried drywall myself, but I suspect a decent job is way beyond my skills.

I need to get it fixed to a ready to paint state.

So, anyone do this kind of work, or any ideas how much I should expect to budget ?

i hired someone to do mine in a house im buying but he honestly did a **** job and I had to go back and refinish everything but honestly that doesn't really look like too big a job I would suspect no more than a couple hundred and even that seems high to me for what it is

Thanks, I've tried a couple of times to find someone, but no one wanted to do it. I don't think it should be too expensive, maybe that's why !

I'm ok with metal, but always foul up wood, so sure if I tried it would look a mess.

yah the size of the job is deff one thing that will work against you but I'd just look up a couple videos and prob give it a try as sheetrock really is easy its just tedious. I'd just cut it a little cleaner cut a piece to fit nail it up and use putty to make everything smooth

It is not a big job, that's why no pro want to do it.
After rock is up, you are looking at at least 2 more visits to feather the seams, with time in between for the mud to dry. What texture do you have on the walls/celing? Orange peel, knock-down, smooth, etc? It is really not that hard to sheetrock. Textured walls and ceiling, if any make it mucj easier to hide the seam.
You can do it, I went from knowing nothing about sheetrocking to re-rocking half of the condo, including bathrooms. Afer looking at my results, vs some of the walls in te new houses, I'll never have someone else do the sheetrocking.

Pretty much smooth, not really familiar with how the finishes are described. I suppose I'll have to have a go, I see a lot of crumbling edges in my future !

eh I get the feeling your gonna get through and be really surprised how easy it was and your finish does look pretty smooth from the pictures which will help. I think you'll be happy with the results if you do it yourself and then you can always look at that corner and be like "hey, I did that!"

If you were closer to Carrolton, I'd give you a hand, it is a weekend project, nothing serious. Watch youtube, cut old rock on the middle of the studs.
Use fiberglass tape, start with 4" knife, then 6 or 8, 12" on the final pass on the ceiling itself. Sand the seams when completly dry, in the corner do one wall at a time. Do not bother with corner mudding knives, they do not work.
I am not a pro, but if you have a question feel free to PM me.
Sink screws just under the surface, but do not break the paper. A quick swipe with a mudding knife across ech screw is a fast way to check.
