This bill will:
- Do away with license requirement for carrying a handgun in GA
- Makes GWL optional for GA residents in order to obtain reciprocity for states that require such
- Criminalize carrying of a long gun for everyone under 21
- Adds a burden of proving oneself to be a “law-abiding citizen”
- Does not expand places for anyone to carry firearms

I've read the entire bill (it's short, EVERYONE should read it) and absolutely do not share their concerns. I get so aggravated with the "it's not every conceivable thing we want so let's not advance the ball at all, mentality."
It's like a man on the brink of starvation refusing a Ribeye because it's not Filet Mignon.
GWL's are THE definition of 'infringement'. Constitutional Carry states have lower crime rates. I'm tired of having to pay for and prove my 'worthiness' to exercise the most clearly enumerated of Constitutional rights.
Georgia Gun Owners is lobbying hard for constitutional carry....and to do away with gun free zones (criminal protection zones)..
I read the bill, didn't see anywhere in there criminalizing carrying of a long gun for those under 21..what i was surprised to see was long gun defined as having a bbl length of at least 18"...

Currently in Georgia, as hopefully most everyone is aware, anyone, including an 18 year old, can openly carry an AR down Peachtree street if they so choose. I'm not sure how many actually avail themselves of this ability but that is current law. They can NOT however do the same with a handgun. As we also know, regardless of age, if you want the government to grant you the PRIVILEGE of carrying concealed (anything, handgun or long gun) you must submit to a background check and pay your 'tax'. HB563 treats long guns and handguns the same way (can anyone tell me why they are or should be treated differently) and REMOVES the requirement for the unconstitutional weapons license/permission slip. I've contacted GCO to hopefully gain a better understanding of their objection, but as written, I will absolutely support it and all gun owners should.
FYI - The same exclusions for 18-20 year olds that are active military, hunting, etc, still apply so nothing changes there. ANY law can be amended after the fact and ANY bill can be amended prior to passage. I find it hard to believe anyone would oppose the elimination of Georgia's licensing requirement for all of Georgia's citizens because it eliminates the disparity between long guns and hand guns for 18-20 year old civilians. But I've been wrong before.... The status quo is absolutely unacceptable to any second amendment supporter and this is a MASSIVE step in correcting that. It's a huge step to even get a bill written. We need to PUSH!
FYI - I just called Rep. Powell's office to find out when the bill will come up for hearing. As you are likely aware, many bills go to committee to die and are never heard of again. Rep. Powell is the chair of the Public Safety and Homeland Security committee where the bill currently resides. They are obviously in session so spoke with his admin and she will call back with a schedule for when it will be heard (I didn't ask "if" it will be heard) and also told her to log my support for it's passage. They currently do not even have a tally sheet logging support. THAT is how SILENT Georgia's gun owners are and how we absolutely deserve the laws we are burdened by.

I called them as well (left a message) to be sure they support this bill. They support 'constitutional carry' on their website but again, you'd "assume" GCO does as well.
At this point, I will defer to GA Carry's learned members of The Bar for their opinion on the end result of this legislation as written. That is not to say it cannot be fixed, but a little research is important before hammering the reps with support of a bill of which I have limited information.
Bills are rarely simple. They almost always take something when they give.
The term "law-abiding" is problematic. Are you no longer "law-abiding" if you are caught speeding?
