Elk Hunt

I don’t know how much it cost to buy a point each year, but it sounds like you / I should Start buying Colorado points every year, and hunting Idaho

Its the cost of the non-resident tag ($700) but you get a refund of likr $650 once your point is awarded. DO IT!! You'll thank yourself in 10 years!

So you buy the tag for somewhere around $700. Then you don’t qualify for the hunt because you didn’t have enough preference points, so they credit you back most of the money you paid? Am I understanding that right? So you have maybe $50 into it for one point, each year. Do that year after year until you have enough points for a prime hunting location? Sounds reasonable. I suppose you can’t let everybody hunt the best spots every year.

I was researching units 43 and 55 in CO. Any familiarity with either of those?

Thanks for the info so far gentlemen!
Have hunted 55... mainly around American Flag Mountain. That was about 15 years ago though... numbers were good and tons of sign... but, as has been mentioned, GET IN SHAPE if you are gonna hunt either 43 or 55... NOT very forgiving terrain! Train the last three months before going only breathing through a coffee stirrer ... plenty of that ground is 12k plus!

I normally draw a cow elk tag every year. Wyoming unit 66

Is it easier / cheaper to get a cow elk tag? Than a bull? Im not a trophy hunter. I just enjoy being out there and putting some meat in the freezer. So maybe a cow elk + a deer just in case? Would that be easier to get in idaho, colorado, or wyoming as you mentioned?

Much easier to draw for a Cow than a Bull. From Wyoming, you can buy one preference point a year for $50 and then if you put in for the tag, you get a preference point as well. In Colorado, they have OTC for a lot of Archery and the later rifle seasons from what I can gather so far.

tagged for information too.
My father hunted colorado and montana for years before he passed. I wish I had the exact locations. Hunting elk is on my bucket list, but life threw me a couple curve balls lately.....so elk will have to wait.
