So I had to change out an O2 sensor on my Trooper because it failed emissions. Got the check engine light to go off, but the original code is still stored on the computer, I know. I can reset it if I have to, but if I do, I have to drive it around a while longer before it's ready for inspection and I don't want to have to do that if I can avoid it. Will it pass inspection if the CEL is off, but there is a code stored on the onboard computer? Or am I going to have to bite the bullet, reset it, and then drive it around a couple more days?

If the light is off, it will pass. My O2 sensor has been bad for years. I get a buddy to reset the computer for me, I drive straight to the testing place, pass, and then it comes back on later that day.

I had a battery go bad on a vehicle I seldom drive. It has never had an emission problem of any kind but since I changed out the battery and the computer reset I had to drive it about 75 miles before the emission test facilitys computer would let it pass.

At worst, you can pull the positive battery cable for 1/2 hour and this will reset the computer and should clear the codes. It may have to relearn your engine dynamics so drive it a few times before the test.

Dont know where you get your emission done(good you can still pull that stunt...lol), but I can tell you they have a outdated piece of equipment. Most stations have the later model equipment that goes by ECU ping off of sensors...meaning if the computer is not in sync with the car which doesnt happen till after say 100 miles. If the codes were just cleared out.I know this because Im a mechanic and have a few friends who own emission stations. you can not get a pass on emission> unless their equipment is not latemodel.
