The way I read the op was that they employee at the door checking receipts refused to take it from him unless he handed it to them so rather than putting down all the items he just payed for he just walked out. He did not refuse to show the receipt

I use to work at Home Depot. Trust me, Costco isn't who you should be upset with, dirty filthy thieves are the reason.

If you lived in a civilized country that punished crime you wouldn't have to deal with these degradation of life issues.

So with the $99 membership fee, in essence, they pay ME to shop there.

Honestly, I've never understood the business model for places like that. I have to pay for the privilege to shop in your store, you want to disarm me, and then you want to go through my stuff before I leave? No thanks.
