Firearms Misnomers

Why would calling a revolver a pistol bother you?

A revolver is simply a particular style of pistol.

pistol: A firearm designed to be held and fired with one hand.

revolver: A pistol having a revolving cylinder with several cartridge chambers that may be fired in succession.

I feel like to handgun is never designed to be fired with one hand.

Because a pistol is of the semi-automatic platform. A revolver is a revolver. It is nitpicky, but terminology is important to me, and it also says a lot about a person's overall understanding of firearms and their various platforms.

I know no one will care, but "revolvers" were called "top breaks" early on, because the top broke open and the cartridges would expel themselves. The next line of revolvers were called "Hand Ejectors", why, well you had to swing open the crane and use the ejector rod to remove the cartridges. So, the term "hand ejector" was coined. I don't call a revolver a pistol, just like I don't call a semi-auto a revolver. But that is just me, to each his or her own.

Looked it up and here are the definitions as they are in the dictionary.

This is why the dictionary definition isn't the gold standard.
