Firearms Misnomers

Because a pistol is of the semi-automatic platform. A revolver is a revolver. It is nitpicky, but terminology is important to me, and it also says a lot about a person's overall understanding of firearms and their various platforms.

No it isn't, the term pistol predates the semi auto handgun by quite a few years.

What would you call this pistol?

I hate it when we agree....I feel all icky and disgusting.

Just to jump into the pistol/revolver discussion. From the Intro to Handguns Class from the "official" PSA lesson guide.

A pistol is classified as having an integral barrel and chamber unlike a revolver which typically has several revolving chambers in a cylinder and a single barrel.

So pistol could apply to both antique single shot muzzle loaders and modern semiautomatic handguns as well as machine-pistols, derringers, and single shots like the Thompson Contender. Each of these would correctly be referred to as a "pistol."

I'll admit that I will on occasion refer to a revolver as a pistol, but certainly never vice versa. :)

So I was listening to Chuck & Chernoff on 680 the Fan yesterday on my way home from work. They did a quick segment about Ryan Tannehill's wife leaving his AR15 in the rental car. Well Chuck made it a point to say "she left his AR15 in the backseat. You know AR, as in "Assault Rifle"..... I couldn't get through the phone lines so I sent Chuck an email correcting him. He actually responded back a few minutes later acknowledging the correction.

"Sniper rifle" = anything with a scope
