First Attempt on my own smoker

I want a smoker but just to wrapped up in my hobby.

Has anybody smoked deer meat in a smoker or is it too lean?
I've smoked backstrap wrapped in bacon but any cut of deer meat has to be closely monitored. It will turn to chalky crap in a hurry. I avoid smoking it because of this. Roasting it at a little higher temp with a smoke tube will get some smokey flavor but you still have to watch overcooking it.

You should try doing a fattie. There are so many options and once you get it down, they are super easy. I have quit them recently since my wife and doctor seem keen on keeping me alive a bit longer, but man are they tasty.

Um, in re-reading my typing, I realize many of you here will think I have drifted off topic, but yes, I am still talking about smoking/grilling.

I think one of the most forgiving things to smoke have got to be chicken thighs because they're still good even if you end up overcooking them. Plus, you can try different dry rubs, marinades, and/or glazes in the same batch if you want to experiment.
I think it’s the best piece on the whole bird.

Dark meat chicken is very very forgiving. It's also my favorite thing on the smoker. The whole reason I've started down this path is my two local guys, one won't do chicken and the other gets $7 each for a dark quarter. I bought a 10lb bag from kroger for I think $15. Good stuff.
