Hartwell (pop. 4600) is a small town in a small county (Hart, pop. 26,000) .

Before COVID, small businesses in Hartwell went thru 3-to-5 year boom-bust cycles. The addition of a Purina plant in the last five years has helped stabilize the local economy, as has the number of work-from-home professionals and retirees who have moved here.

But, the city planners need to have their heads examined:

A Church's Chicken is going up right in the middle of the retail section of town. Normally I would welcome another dining choice. But just down the road sits Zaxby's, Guthrie's, Bojangle's, and Popeye's. All in a 1 mile radius, inside city limits. If you go west another mile, a Blazer's Wings.

How much chicken can we eat?!?

And that same radius has more than a half dozen other fast food choices, and plus a half-dozen local eateries. And two Starbucks (WTF is that about?).

If you're ever here: Guthrie's is the best. It's a throwback to the old days of fast food. Tiny place. Take out only. Three things on the menu: Tenders, fries, drinks. Four, if you count the tender sandwich. Best chicken tenders and dipping sauce I've ever had. A bit pricey, but worth every penny.

40 - 45 (ish) years ago it was the hamburger joints.
Growing up in my home town there was a cross section
near main street/downtown where you could drive past
McDonald's, Burger King, Hardee's, Wendy's, White Castle,
Krystal's and about 3-5 local places that changed
names/locations every few years, all within 2 to 3 blocks of
each other.

Agreed. Guthries is the best. We have one within 2 miles here. Does great business. Rumor has it, Zaxbys somehow got the recipes and started their version. I know that I prefer Guthries and really don’t like Zaxbys. Here’s what AI says:

“Zaxby's is often accused of copying Guthrie's, as both restaurants specialize in chicken fingers and share similar menu items. According to multiple sources, the founders of Zaxby's and Raising Cane's, two other chicken finger chains, worked at Guthrie's while attending the University of Georgia. This has led to allegations that Zaxby's and Raising Cane's took inspiration from Guthrie's, with some claiming that Zaxby's "ripped off" Guthrie's.However, it is also noted that Zaxby's has a more extensive menu than Guthrie's, including salads, buffalo sauces, and other options. While some argue that Zaxby's did not directly copy Guthrie's, others believe that the general concept and recipe were taken from Guthrie's. Ultimately, the extent to which Zaxby's copied Guthrie's remains a topic of debate.”
