FL Gulf Pier Fishing Rig

30 pound string would of been a fl line class record out of Destin on the Bounty Hunter, but we put it on board to drain the air blaster for a release, to boat a Goliath grouper is considered catching it, and u can’t do that!

I just sold my charter boat out of Destin, I have 2 penn reels on custom wrap rods off the Bounty Hunter that I saved, they will handle what ever u come across in the gulf, but not in the $ that u wanted to pay, just get ya a wall mart fall apart, and some steel leaders for when the kings show up, for your reds and trout, go as light as u can stand to, 8lb or less, your reds and big trout like golden croakers..probably can’t get those, use what ever the bait shop is selling that’s live

I'm going to be spending a week in Carrebelle, FL on the gulf coast. There is a fishing pier at the campground that goes 250' out into the gulf. I've never fished salt water (except for guided tours on vessels). Since I'm there for a week, and there isn't much else to do around there, I'd like to see if I can catch anything. But, I don't have a rod and reel with me. My gear is all fresh water anyway. So, I need to buy a rod and reel, but not quite sure what I need. Budget is about $100ish for the combo. It looks like the fish that are around that area and are in season include Sheepshead, pompano, black drum, mahi, flounder, and a few other species. Since I'm traveling, I can't order anything for shipment to me, so have to find a tackle shop. But my question is: What should I buy?

I was thinking a medium duty spinning reel, rod of about 8'. Monofiliment line of about 25 or 30#, and using live bait (shrimp, sand fleas or whatever the bait shop sells).

Am I being to optimistic on the size of fish I hope to catch? Should I maybe plan on getting a lighter rig?
I worked charter boats out of Destin for about 25 years, the last 10 years I owned a 50 foot glass boat, I saved 2 spinning rods off the boat, i gave the other 60 rods to the new owner, these are custom wrapped rods with penn reels, they are 30 lb reels, nd have caught, wahoo, sails, lots of links..and of coarse cobia, they will handle what ever comes along on the pier, besides a 800 lb mako..lol..then just kiss your string good by, because your getting spooled..these are easily $300 each, being as though I haven’t used them on catfish like I thought I would, I’ll sell 1 of them..if interested pm me, I’ll send pictures, and we can meet so u can look at the sticks!

Picked up a decent 10ft Penn rod and reel setup from academy a couple of weeks ago. Price was $99.99 + tax. Just need to add line.

Good deal..just remember, when you’re fishing on the pier..cast with your back to the water, so u can keep an eye on your hooks, and other people behind u!..I promise your rig won’t land in a tree..lol
