Good luck. That ship has sailed about 5 years ago. Anyone that tells you otherwise is lying to you.
you’ll need at least double that to find any DECENT car that may need some form of repairs or maintenance upgrades even at that. Don’t even bother with Craigslist or Facebook. Best bet is friends and Neighbors.

Cheap cars are still out there. Everyone isn't trying to take you for a ride. I've had luck with a $600 Scion from a ODT member that lasted over a year
If your definition of reliable is something that will last a little over a year we have different standards. Good luck on your search.
If you don't mind older vehicles you don't have to mess about with emissions if it is 25 years old or older. (Right now that means 1996 or older, meaning that you could get a vehicle with an OBD2 port and not have to mess around with emissions). I recall seeing a 1990's or so Toyota or something that extent a couple weeks ago on here but I can't seem to find it right now. Good luck on your search.
Depends on your time frame...I will be selling my 2006 Altima soon...cosmetically it doesn't look good but everything works and it is reliable. 235k miles. $2500
I am going to look at a 2001 Camry later today. Wont know if it fits the needs until I actually see it
