I don't agree with some folks responses in here but your original post does not mention the referral having to buy a car for you to give them a $100 referral fee. That's just plain shady and sounds like.... Well..... A used car salesman. You should probably edit your post to include that, it's kind of major.

Just noticed that it wasn't very clear, edited it

This is commonly referred to as a birddog. Being around for a long time, nothing new about it.

Yes sir. And the dealership doesn't actually pay you anything. The "bird dog" gets added into the price of the car so in essence you are costing your friend MORE money by referring them.

Sold cars for one summer. Tough business, I wasn't cut out for it to be sure.

I sold Chevys and Nissans for a couple years. We never raised the price to cover the birddog. It come out of the profit. The Chevy dealership was a nice place, small family owned. Got 20% of the gross. Used to make a killing on used cars. I kinda miss it but I hate trying to budget on flexed income.

Well, I should restate that. We never raised the price, but the 200 dollar bird dog we payed kept the general sales managers bottom dollar 200 dollars higher. No way was that 200 dollars cutting into the GSMs pocket. Salesmen got 25% of the gross and GSM got 25% of the dealerships gross.

What did it for me was my mom wanted to buy a car that one of our sister stores sold. I went by that store and they told me they would sell her the car at A plan (employee pricing) for me. My GSM told me that he would transfer the car to our dealership so I could sell her the car and it would go towards my monthly sales. When she came in to buy the car the GSM wouldn't give her employee pricing and told me there was no way he was selling that car for less than 2000 gross profit. I told him to stick it and that I would buy the car from the sister store. I went across town, sold her the car at the sister store for employee pricing and quit as soon as the ink was dry on the contracts.

Too cut throat for me.

Damn....

My uncle was a a Ford dealership car salesman for many many years.

His favorite thing was convincing old widowed lady's 70+, that would come in to trade in their year old crown Vic for a new one every year, that they looked way sexier in a red convertible mustang cobra or GT. I remember on 3 seperate occasions we went in to see him at work and seeing these old lady's driving off, one lady was 74 looked like a fragile little Grandmaw and she even went back to a manual.....Saleen mustang! She was tearing out the parking lot smiling ear to ear.

That's not how we do it. Whatever the price the car is sold for is the same, the dealership just pays the 100 bucks as a thanks to whoever sent us the customer. That's a reason I like working for a group1 automotive owned dealership. Unlike some other dealer companies, group1 has some integrity and transparency in how we do things, which makes me feel a lot better, knowing that we won't do anyone wrong

YES!!! used cars is where it's at! I've worked at a Toyota lot,Kia lot,2 Ford lots,GMC/Cadillac, a Mitsubishi lot and a Hyundai lot. And I'm so glad to not have to do that for a living anymore. The customers hate you and lie to you. The management hates you and tries every trick in the book to chargeback **** to your deals and otherwise screw you out of your money. You work 11 -12 hour days 6 days a week and when you take your off day they act like you're lazy.
The short of it is this; if you're selling anything for a living it better be goods that you own. Otherwise someone will try to screw you out of your commission. My mom has been in insurance for 30 years and has plenty of examples of this.

My wife drives an 04 Camry LE with 303K on it. So I can't complain about Toyotas. I'd rather have a Ford truck but it is what it is. Better Toyota than Government Motors.
