How can you say no to this? This is probably what we will end up doing.
I bred an English Bulldog that had 6 puppies I can explain the cost. These are very similar to the Frenchy as both would not survive without human intervention. English Bulldogs do not normally breed naturally so that means artificial that I paid $40 for the procedure and $700 for the semen donated by a champion male with no health issues. My female was $2500 as she is also from champion lines. Best healthy dogs hopefully breed healthy puppies. Then she had to have C-section as they do not have normal births because the heads are to big. Another $700 to $1200 for the procedure. You cannot leave the pups with the mother as the mother is clumsy and might injure them. For their first 3wks of life my wife and I switched off every 2 to 3 hrs and fed them round the clock. My female also refused to stimulate to pee/poop so we had to do that after every feeding. Then there is shots, worming and feeding once old enough to eat solid food. We also had a runt that we had to bottle feed round the clock. Some of the pups developed cherry eye which all breeds that have droopy eyes can develop. That was another $100 each. Then there is the clean up after puppy feeding and pooping afterwards. Lastly comes the task of trying to find good honest people that will care for these dogs and provide forever homes. Add to this the breeders time to care for pups and the trips to the Vet. That's why prices are high. Honest Breeders want the best for their puppies so they ask higher prices because someone willing to put out $1000 to $3000 for a dog will take care of it and not give it away or take it to a shelter. It was a lot of work and worth doing once but never again.
Please research research research before buying. The English Bulldog cannot physically clean its back end like most dogs so guess who gets to do it. They also have to have both their tail pocket and face wrinkles cleaned every other day to prevent infection. They burp, fart, snore and sometimes gag to the point of throwing up. Forget about guard dog as everyone is their best buddy.
All of that being said you might be able to contact breeders in your area that have males or females they are retiring from breeding and they want good homes for them. These dogs will have to be spayed or neutered but you get a pure bred healthy dog for a few hundred or sometimes free if you provide a forever home for them.
May I recommend a Cane Corso with none of the health problems and you don't have to wipe their butt! They will be very loyal loving friends to you and your children but fierce protectors of the same and your home.
