Front Stairs-to paint or stain?

I put a strip of this down on each step after paint has dried. Worked great, held up for years.

I know you said you don't want texture strips, but I'm assuming you're talking about the adhesive type, like skateboard tape?

I too didn't want that type but I found some aluminum and plastic ones that are black and look good. I'll get pics from my phone when I get home---I can't have my phone at work

Edit: the ones I have are like this. I have a short strip that's plastic, and the wider one is powdercoated metal like these. My wide one also has a lip on the front that bends down in front of the riser
