Front strap checkering on my 1911

I have a Springfield Loaded and would like to have some checkering done.

Are there any dos/don'ts?
What is the general cost range I would be looking at from a smith?

DO get it done by someone who knows what they're doing.
DON'T try to do it yourself without proper skills/tools.

~$300 or so last time I had it done if I recall correctly.
