Item Description: For sale is a rather unique SMLE. It started life as a 1911 RSAF Enfield No1 MkIII (no star), it was either in SA service during the Great War, or made its way there soon afterward. Buttstock is stamped with the broad arrow inside 'U' (Union of South Africa, 1910-1961)
Barrel shows the not too often seen rifle crossed with spear marking, showing a rebarrel date of Feb, 1965.
Front sight marked 'PARKER HALE'.
The brass disc marking is the most interesting. It shows 'GB & ANS.', which is the Gunner, Bombing & Air Navigation School' which was a South African Air Force school formed in 1946.
At some point after the dissolution of the UoSA, it was surplused to India, as evidenced by the roundel to the right of the broad arrow in 'U'.
Rifle is in excellent shape, and will come with a Pattern 1907 bayonet marked 'Australia'.
