This 601 Rifle Upper recreates the classic design of the original AR-15 issued to the United States Military in the early 1960s.
The Model 601 was the very first AR-15 adopted by the US Military, seeing service with the United States Air Force & other units in Southeast Asia early in the 1960s. Featuring the classic slick side receiver, the 601 is one of the sleekest models ever developed, and represents almost a true iteration of Eugene Stoner’s original design philosophy.
Up For Your Consideration is a NEW Model 601 Slickside Retro Upper Receiver.
The upper that you will receive will be a COMPLETE upper, fully assembled including charging handle, A1 rear site, dust cover and gas tube. It will be ready to attach to your lower and shoot!

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF PARTS:
Upper: (black in color to more easily match your desired lower):
The Brownells AR-15 / M16 Slickside Upper Receiver precisely mirrors the contours of the original, early AR-15 upper receiver. The upper has the following features specific to the original Slickside:
• Correct early-style carry handle contours
• No shell deflector
• No forward assist
• A1-pattern rear sight housing
With help from the folks at Nodak Spud, this precise match was achieved by starting with 7075 T6 aluminum forgings that already have the proper profile built in. In machining to final dimensions, all points where other parts attach are finished current mil-spec dimensions, so current-production AR-15 components will fit perfectly. However, note that the AR-15 / M16 Slickside Upper Receiver is so period-accurate it DOES NOT have the M4-type feed ramps found on most current-production AR-15 flattop uppers.
Bolt Carrier Group:
Classic Retro Chrome M16 Bolt Carrier Groups match the finish of the bolt found on the earliest AR-15 & M16 rifles introduced.
The Brownells M16 Chrome 5.56 Complete Bolt Carrier Group included a bolt machined from 9310 steel, which is magnetic particle inspected & finished with a slick chrome finish. The carrier is fabricated from 8620 hardened steel and also receives the same, durable chrome application. In addition to the bolt and carrier, the extractor, gas key and cam pin also are chromed to ensure all moving parts are corrosion resistant and as slick as possible.
The model without serrations is similar to the original BCG found on early AR-15s, such as the Air Force 601.

This handguard set is modeled directly off of original handguards, which are becoming increasingly difficult to find, or in decent condition. Left and Right Handguard halves include aluminum heatshields, protecting your hand and the handguards from barrel heat.
Retro furniture from Brownells is not an exact copy of original components or their construction. Some areas have been changed due to manufacturing methods or to avoid counterfeit concerns.
Flash Hider:
The “Duckbill” flash hider was found on some of the earliest AR-15 rifles such as the Colt Model 601 used by the US Air Force. These were eventually phased out due to the lightweight prongs bending. Looks great at home on a Retro rifle, or any AR-15 of your choice.
