I was raised in the country but in the late sixties when I was about thirteen we moved to a subdivision in another town because of my fathers work. There were two older "city" boys already living there who thought they and everything they had was better than me and what I had.
The subdivision had a considerable amount of undeveloped forest bordering it so I made good use of it hunting squirrels with my fathers old .22 rifle.
One morning while heading into the woods I met the two city boys. They both had their daddies auto twelve gauges and nice hunting vests with all loops full of shells. They told me I could come with them and help "tear up some squirrels" but I declined and went my own way.
The woods were full of squirrels that morning and I could hear the guys cutting loose time after time. Sometimes they would both empty their guns and I figured they really must be tearing them up. It sounded like a war zone at times!
I just took my time, determined to bring back some squirrels, even though I only had seven bullets with me. I also did not want to be outdone by them.
At the end of the morning on the way out of the woods we met up again. Their eyes immediantly went to the six squirrels I had hanging fron my pants beltloops. I had missed once.
With all the firing I heard I expected them laugh at me and empty out game bags over stuffed with squirrels to show me up. Instead one guy reached in his bag and pulled out half a shot off squirrel tail.
That was it.

In my youth (late teens/early twenties), a good friend of mine and I had an annual squirrel hunt outing at one of their family friend's farms out in Tallapoosa. We always had a great time. But I learned more about squirrel hunting on those outings than any other time I had in the woods. My buddy and I were city boys, having lived in Smyrna all of our lives up until that point. His dad and the farm owner were truly country boys. Some of the lessons I learned from my trips with them:

1. Never underestimate a country boy's ability to harvest game with whatever they had in their hand at any given moment. I've seen my buddy's dad pick off squirrels with his old Remington 22LR from obscene ranges. I'm talking head shots, not body shots. I couldn't even see the squirrel at the range he would take them.

2. Never underestimate the country boy who owns one hunting gun - I guarantee he knows how to use it. I've watch the farm owner pick off squirrels in flight between tree limbs with his single-shot 20-ga. shotgun. I don't ever recall him missing, either.

3. Never underestimate a city boy's abilities to get himself into trouble in the woods. This list is far too long and distinguished to go into...believe me. My buddy and I can hunt, and have bagged our share of squirrel over the years. But we could get into trouble at any given time just as easily!

I had a H&R topper .410 when I turned 9 years old. Squirrels where hard to find in the lowcountry of SC in the 60's but Mama would cook them up fried and with gravy. Still have my .410...

There is also a big diff in city squirrels and country squirrels.....

Very true....city squirrels around here are fat, lazy, and protected. I used to hunt an area in the country that had really tall old growth oak trees. More than once I had squirrels dive bomb me out of the tops of the trees and had to drop my bead to step out of the way. Strange...
