This is a real M1 Thumb from about 5 months ago when learning the M1 action. I lost the nail and it is almost grown back. Hurt like hell and I felt stupid because I was trying to avoid it!

Timing Four parts control it. I still have the spare set I used to swap out to stop the early bolt closing. You can check it with a timing block. A properly timed Garand shouldn’t do it

It’s simple now, but you use the heel of your right hand to slightly push back the bolt. You then use your thumb to push down the ammo carrier; you then release the pressure from the heel and get out of the way as the bolt slams forward. If you don’t get the thumb out of the way, it gets chambered like a shell casing.…not good.
This is if you are just releasing the bolt, if you are inserting a clip of ammo, its different.
