I remember the blue light special. I worked at the South Macon KMart in sporting goods/automotive. My mom worked at the same store in 67. I had to use the intercom system more than once to announce what the BLS was for the next 15 minutes. Back then they paid us in cash. They still took the state and federal deductions but every Friday all your money including loose change was in an envelope that was handed to you in the break room by the HR lady.
I remember Kroger paying by cash vouchers that you'd have take to the customer service desk and present (and sometimes beg) for your money. I liked working for Kroger but I HATED having to ask for my pay.
