Well, we’re going to the Grand Canyon, by way of Vegas. Need suggestions where to stay with the wife and kid. We’re driving to AZ for a night for the big ditch tour. Never been to Fremont Street, was considering staying there. Is it better/worse than the Strip? Anyone have suggestions?

Vegas is WAYYYYYY overpriced. Stop in Laughlin, Nv. and have as good a time at 1/3 the cost, and it's closer to the Grand Canyon. Bring a fly rod with you and fish the Colorado River. Get an Arizona license in Bullhead City, it's cheaper.

From OP's post.

I went to Vegas annually from about 1995 to 2005, then as a retirement gift to myself in 2014. Prices were way up with the implementation of "resort fees". The "old Vegas" was gone, no more 3--2 blackjack, replaced with 6-5, food prices doubled or tripled, no more free parking, etc. Unless you plan on spending 10k or so, stay home, or find a cheaper place to gamble.

Some people can afford it, and want the experience.

Infant, toddler, teenager?

The kid is 9. We’re splitting the trip because Vegas has a **** ton of stuff to do, and we can use it as a base to visit the Grand Canyon as well as Zion. Maybe Death Valley if we’re frisky enough to do 4 states in a week. Probably stay 2 days in Scottsdale and the rest in LV. Lots of cool museums and stuff too. I’m really just curious is Fremont Street is decent enough to stay down there or should we stay on the Strip? Wife and I will visit the casino a bit, but we’re not big gamblers.

yes, Fremont is an option, but stay in the better places, not the cheapest dive you can find. You will find better gaming options there too, not the higher limits of the Strip.

Fremont Street experience would be so much fun with the kid. I wouldn’t tell them anything about it and just watch them lose their mind at the scale of the audio visual mayhem.
But, my actual perception of Fremont Street, and I’ve only been twice, was that it was a cheaper, trashier crowd than the Casino strip crowd. I’d take my kids for sure to experience it, but would not stay there with them.
